Twin 300 hp Verados rocketed Intrepid’s 327 Center Console to 60 mph smooth as a chamois, and it never exceeded four degrees of bow rise. Though both tachometers were redlining, we netted 1 mpg. Of course, economy increases at cruising speeds, as the chart shows. The 327 supplants the well-regarded 323, and we believe Intrepid took its design and build to the next level.
The 327’s sheer rises, and the resultant S-shape visually balances the transom’s tumblehome. This looks great and has the practical effect of increasing both width and depth in the bow cockpit. Additionally, the gunwales are several inches narrower, further increasing cockpit space stem to stern.
Now check out the 327’s stepped hull. It’s a symphony of shapes working in harmony. By dropping the keel line, the forward panel’s deadrise has been increased to enhance turning, and that greater angle allowed opening up the vents, improving speed and efficiency. Aft, the motor bracket’s submerged “bucket” is lower, increasing buoyancy, and the bottom is five inches longer. These characteristics help support the weight of today’s monster outboards, but at the cost of some increased drag at top end. To compensate, keel vents — mini steps — are incorporated forward of the transom. These features proved their worth in the confident turning, no-squat takeoff and light-handed control of the helm I experienced during sea trials.
My tester had zero rod holders, though the owner did specify a rocket launcher to stow mops and boathooks. No livewell either. Of course you can have a full complement of fishing gear installed, and Intrepid offers the 327 Tournament Edition, which is currently fishing — and winning — along the Southern Kingfish Association trail.
As equipped for testing with its generous head, comfortable bow lounge with integral recliners, side boarding door, more stowage than a warehouse and a stunning and sturdy top into which a sunroof can be installed, the 327 makes a great runabout. The way it runs and rides, “weather days” are sure to be few and far between.
