BOAT REVIEW
Big boats have made the biggest splashes in recent years, so it’s a great credit to this “little” 20-foot X-2 that it has become MasterCraft’s best-seller in only its first year. The agile, trailerable size has certainly struck a chord with inboard buyers, as have the very cool double-pronged bow, the loads of wakeboarding features and the second-to-none construction quality. There’s also its cutting-edge modified step hull, which crafts versatile wakes, whether for wakeboarding, skiing or wake surfing. The X-2 is an instant classic.
PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS
Anyone familiar with MasterCraft will see that distinctive bow and naturally think this is a mini X-Star. But the most notable difference is in the hull. It’s a compact 20 feet long and 94 inches wide, and its step design is more an evolution of the steps on the X-30 and X-45 than it is a contraction of the X-Star’s hull. There’s more deadrise near the back so the transom has a V shape, and the step design sets the stern deeper into the water at wakeboarding speeds under 24 mph. The result is solid, rampy wakes with a smooth transition and crisp lip, so intermediate riders can soar into the flats as they work on new moves. Advanced riders may look beyond the 550 pounds of factory ballast to boost the wakes further for more air.
At much lower speeds and by shifting ballast, the wake surfing is loads of fun for a boat this size. And skiing speeds take further advantage of the step hull by reducing the running surface and quieting the wakes for recreational carving back and forth.
