Super Sport Crossover. That’s what the model suffix designates. What it means is a series of Formula boats that meld crisp handling, smooth riding, high performance, the amenities of a full cabin, and the option for crowd-pleasing dayboating all in one sexy-looking hull.
But first: Dat platform, doh? The 380 SSC’s huge swim platform provides excellent water access via the undermount swim ladder installed on both sides. Additionally, this expansive platform offers a great place to mingle with guests, extending the sociability and crowd-swallowing ability of the cockpit. There’s a standing-height table, and we’d suggest considering the upholstered sport station fitted with drink holders and safety rails.
The platform also serves to mount the outboards (should you choose that route; sterndrive power is readily available). The 380 SSC we previewed at a recent boat show sported twin Mercury 600 V-12 outboards painted to match the boat. Boy, did they look sharp, and we hope to run that very boat.
Why? Because the SS—Super Sport—part of this boat’s name defines a specific thing for us. Decades of testing boats have proven that the ones riding a Formula FAS3TECH hull form, all of which have been designed by John Adams, can punch smoothly through chop, handle nimbly yet predictably at speed, and exhibit no quirks. In short, the more you run boats, the more you are likely to enjoy running a Formula SSC. We’ll still have to see it for ourselves, but there is no denying that history.
Of course, it’s easy on the eyes, inside and out. Check out the painted graphics sealed with Imron Elite clear coat. Admire the sleek lines of the coupe top, with its motorized sunroof that provides climate control to the helm deck. Head belowdecks to discover a designer cabin that sleeps four in a private aft berth and a convertible salon lounge. There’s a full galley, and the head boasts solid-surface counters, designer faucets, a vacuum-flush commode and more.
Seeking a boat possessed of excitement as much as practicality and versatility? Place Formula’s 380 SSC on your list.
