We nudged the throttles on the triple Mercury 300 Verados and left the inlet. Seas were a steady 4 feet with an occasional fiver. It was a poor day to wring out a top speed but a fantastic day to see if this 35-foot center-console could live up to the Whaler reputation for stout and seaworthy construction.
It did. In the lesser seas we touched low 50s in speed. In the fours and fives, we throttled down to 40 mph and marveled at how softly it re-entered with confident stability. Leaning back into the bolstered helm seat, feet wedged against the helm station, we found the ride secure and confident. Even turning 180 degrees across the crests, it maintained our trust. We took only a little spray, the all-glass windshield protecting us. Through it all, not even the gear bag stowed in the console below rattled or banged around. The solid ride attests to Boston Whaler’s commitment to its unsinkable building style and the use of yacht-quality, polished stainless-steel hardware.
Whaler offers the Outrage equipped to fish with many options to make it an outrageous competitor. Optional livewells feature side drains and powerful pumps. A standard tackle center on the leaning post provides stowage and a bait prep area with a freshwater sink. A 65-quart cooler nests in its base on sliding rails. The hardtop includes rocket launchers.
If you’re not into fishing, Whaler offers a summer kitchen option instead of tackle storage and livewell, with an electric Kenyon grill in place of the bait prep area.
Anglers will want to add outriggers for trolling — the hardtop is ready to receive them, as well as an optional radome and an optional upper station.
Soften the cockpit with foldaway lounges; they stow as quickly as you can close a hatch.
Whaler’s unsinkable reputation comes with a build-to-order, custom feel to one of the best production boats available today.
