Last year’s introduction of the SX190 marked Yamaha’s long-awaited entry into the competitive 19-foot bowrider segment. If that boat was too entry-level for you, check out the new SX192, an upscale version of that same 19-foot-2-inch boat. The 192 marks the first time that Yamaha has put a supercharged engine into a boat, and not just a PWC. No longer rated by the manufacturer, but estimated to churn out between 210 and 230 hp, that 1,812 cc engine powered our test boat onto plane in three seconds, pushed it past the 30 mph mark in 5.3 seconds, and delivered a top speed of 50 mph. It also powered the hull through the tight turns that jets are known for. Go, speed racer, go.
That jet-drive engine also delivers an extremely low-profile, direct-drive layout with practical advantages. Without bulky hardware or 90-degree gear linkages to work around, Yamaha was able to forgo a space-sapping sun pad or engine box and instead installed seating directly atop the engine. Look aft and you’ll see a wraparound, U-shaped bench spanning the perimeter and taking advantage of every inch of cockpit space. Jet power also gives the transom a noticeably lower profile than sterndrive or outboard runabouts can. Step through and you’ll find the iconic, two-tier swim platform that Yamaha has made its trademark. Padded backrests make it a great spot to gear up for water sports or just hang out at anchor in your favorite cove.
Like a lot of builders of late, Yamaha notably flares out the bow to create a wider cockpit, sharpening up the looks with edgy prongs vaguely reminiscent of a pickle fork. The choice allows for a bow compartment that tapers from 5 feet 6 inches forward of the consoles to a still-generous 4 feet at the bow. That’s adult-size width, although a maximum length of 4 feet may cramp some occupants. Vinyl and carpet throughout are upgraded from the 190, with richer colors and textures, and cup holders get a chromelike trim. Similar upscale enhancements include a vinyl wrap for the glove box and dash, four Polk Audio speakers to complement the Clarion stereo, and an upgraded steering wheel.
