Tohatsu Corporation has expanded its mid-range outboard lineup with the new MFS150A, a 150 hp four-stroke designed to deliver strong performance without the weight penalty often associated with motors in this class. Built on the same platform as the company’s MFS75A through MFS140A series, this motor aims at boaters seeking quicker acceleration, improved fuel economy and easier trailering thanks to what Tohatsu says is the lightest 150 hp outboard currently available. Depending on the comparison, the MFS150A reportedly trims as much as 133 pounds from competing engines, a difference that can translate into shallower draft, better efficiency and more responsive handling.
Performance enhancements start with a 4-2-1 performance-tuned exhaust system engineered to boost low- and mid-range torque, helping boats climb onto plane faster and with less effort. Tohatsu also fine-tuned the ECU calibration to sharpen throttle response across the rpm range. Fuel economy remains a priority as well, with the outboard relying on a SOHC four-valve design intended to maximize combustion efficiency while keeping weight in check.
Modern boats continue to demand more electrical output, and the MFS150A answers with a 41-amp alternator capable of supporting today’s electronics-heavy helm stations, livewells and onboard accessories. Operators can also tailor idle speed to conditions, adjusting rpm between 650 and 850 in five increments for smoother docking, trolling or no-wake maneuvering in the harbor.

Tohatsu paid equal attention to long-term durability when engineering the MFS150A. More than 16 sacrificial anodes are integrated throughout this new outboard engine to combat corrosion, while anodized aluminum components and a stainless-steel water-pump housing liner add another layer of protection in harsh saltwater environments. Routine maintenance will also prove simple to perform for owners of the MFS150A. That’s because its comes with an integrated oil catch tray beneath the filter and a tool-free fuel filter designed for quick checks and easy water drainage. The engine’s rugged Sheet Molding Compound cowling contributes to its durability, and a built-in freshwater flushing system streamlines your post-run desalinization procedures.
The MFS150A is offered in both 20- and 25-inch shaft lengths, with a counter-rotating version available in the 25-inch configuration for boats that call for a twin-engine applications Tohatsu backs the MFS150A with a five-year limited warranty. It is also notable that this new outboard engine complies with EPA standards and , in fact, exceeds them with its CARB three-star rating which is 65-percent better than most.
Officially announced in January 2026, the MFS150A arrives as Tohatsu continues to build momentum in the marine market, following a run of seven consecutive Customer Satisfaction Index awards that underscores the brand’s growing reputation among boaters.
