Live sonar—aka Forward-Facing Sonar or FFS—has revolutionized the way anglers find fish. Generating images of fish and structure in real time, the technology was first introduced by Humminbird, then followed by Garmin and Lowrance. Now Lowrance has taken this technology to the next level with the new ActiveTarget 2 XL.
ActiveTarget 2 XL features surface-to-surface 180-degree views that deliver some of the most amazing clarity and coverage in this product category. The real-time images are reminiscent of medical ultrasound imaging. Lowrance calls it “best-in-class” resolution.
Building on the award-winning Lowrance ActiveTarget 2 platform, the new XL transducer provides improved resolution versus the previous system. The single transducer offers a sweeping 180-degree field of vision spanning Forward, Down, and Scout modes ensuring no fish, bait or structure goes unseen. The full-screen display can capture detail as fine as a descending lure to the moment a fish strikes, all as actually occurs.
Switching views is also now a lot easier. The redesigned XL transducer allows anglers to instantly toggle between Forward XL and Down XL views directly from the display, with no manual adjustments or physically rotation of the transducer required. The new bracket, which can be mounted on the shaft or motor of a Recon trolling motor or on a freestanding transducer pole, enables seamless transitions into Scout mode. Once activated, built-in reference markers guide anglers to the optimal angle for both deep and shallow water to enable greater casting accuracy.

All that is needed to upgrade to ActiveTarget 2 XL is the new transducer. Anglers can simply mount the XL transducer and start fishing using an existing Lowrance ActiveTarget 2 sonar module to minimize setup time.
For those seeking greater situational awareness, combining the new 360-degree Scout XL live view to see around the entire boat with Forward XL/Down XL allows anglers to identify the casting spots without repositioning. However, this requires running two sonar modules and transducers, and this particular functionality is compatible only with the Lowrance HDS Pro series MFDs.
The new Lowrance ActiveTarget 2 XL transducer upgrade starts at $1,399 and is now available at retailers. To learn more, visit lowrance.com.
