Upgrade Your Trailer With Maintenance-Free Bunk Boards

Learn how to replace worn wooden boat trailer bunks with maintenance-free, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) synthetic lumber.

Maintaining a boat trailer is an essential part of ownership, and after several years, traditional wooden bunks often require replacement due to worn carpeting or padding. For boaters tired of the constant cycle of replacing rotted wood and torn carpet, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) synthetic lumber offers a long-lasting, DIY-friendly solution.

Ultimate vs. Supreme Bunk Boards

There are two primary types of HDPE timber designed to perfectly match the dimensions of standard wooden bunks:

  • Ultimate Bunk Boards: These are ideal for vertical orientations or trailer setups where the spans between upright supports are less than four feet.
  • Supreme Bunk Boards: Designed for longer spans, these boards feature an integrated aluminum extrusion underneath for added strength.

The HDPE material is soft enough to protect your boat’s hull while remaining tough enough to resist grit and grime. Unlike carpet, which can trap abrasive debris that scrapes your boat, these smooth surfaces allow for easier loading and unloading.

Installation Essentials

Replacing your old bunks is a straightforward process that utilizes stainless steel hardware and standard tools:

  • Tools Needed: An electric drill with a 1/2-inch bit (or a bit matching your bolt size), and a ratchet driver, socket wrench, or adjustable wrench.
  • Maintain Geometry: Use a straight edge and yardstick to measure your trailer’s geometry before removing the old bunks to ensure the new ones are positioned correctly.
  • The “Shim” Tip: The aluminum extrusion on Supreme boards adds approximately 3/4-inch of height. If you are mixing Supreme and Ultimate boards on the same trailer, you must use 3/4-inch shims under the Ultimate boards to keep the trailer geometry level.

Improved Launching and Loading

Switching to synthetic bunks significantly reduces the force needed to move your boat, whether you are powering on with a motor or using a hand winch. Because the material is so slick, it is vital to keep the boat attached to the trailer winch until it is positioned exactly where you want it to slide into the water.

By making the switch to HDPE boards, you can enjoy more time on the water and less time performing trailer maintenance.
