It’s no surprise that fishing is one of the most popular things to do with a boat. It’s also no surprise that the, “face,” of boating anglers has long been a male, wearing a ball cap, needing a shave and wearing apparel bedecked with gamefish, hooks, or other fishing regalia (I need only look to the swordfish dart belt buckle in my sock drawer to know this is true). The rugged male, “anglersexual,” archetype is not wholly inaccurate, but it is incomplete. Tens of millions of women fish, many doing so from boats. For this reason, I’m pleased that Chris Woodward, in charge of our sister media outlet, Sport Fishing, just birthed a new podcast, Women in Fishing aimed right at this group of enthusiasts and which I encourage Boating audience members to watch.
“I’m excited,“ Woodward enthused, “to present a menu of great content – from all of our fishing and boating brands — to entice more women to try the sport of fishing and to stick with it. With so many of us embracing the outdoors and chasing adventure, fishing fits right into the mindset of today’s women.”
While Women in Fishing focuses on women and novice anglers, the lineup of guests and topics slated for exploration suggests broader appeal. Here’s a rundown:
For January 2022, Sport Fishing Executive Editor, Chris Woodward, talks with Stephanie Vatalaro, senior vice president of marketing and communications, Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation, and Sarah Harper Burke, senior manager of marketing, Shimano North America Fishing, about encouraging women to enter the sport and grow in it with tips and advice on how to get started along with plans to host future events.
