Boat Test: 2026 Formula 360 CBR Outboard

The 360 Crossover Bowrider is a luxurious, customizable dayboat that delivers reliable performance and a smooth ride.

Overview

Boating covered Formula’s sterndrive version of the 360 Crossover Bowrider (CBR) in the 2026 Boat Buyers Guide issue. I had the privilege of sitting behind the helm of that exciting new model and learned it lived up to the standards set by more than half a century of Porter family leadership, engineering and experience. Lines are crisp, sleek, the finish is glossy. The interior design complements the exterior with equally crisp, firm yet supple upholstery, and luxury features such as Corian surfaces and highly polished stainless-steel hardware. The outboard version brought all of that to the water with the added power of three 400 hp Mercury Verado outboards, more speed and a massive storage area—where the sterndrive engines were—ideal for carrying a huge amount of gear and supplies.

Many color options are available for the 360 CBR and the gloss, thanks to premium composites and a proprietary component in the premium Ineos gelcoat. The gelcoat’s mirror-like finish is designed to last by reducing styrenes that cause gelcoats to yellow over time. The finish was fine and the quality of layup was especially evident in the perfect diamond-plate nonskid deck and gunwales.

Formula’s proven, patented FAS3Tech multistep hull delivers reliable performance, and a smooth, solid ride in rough water that comes from its sharp V-bottom and the molded structural stringer grid bonded to it. The grid not only provides solid hull structure, it is designed to accommodate and enhance features such as the cabin and head compartment.

Engines

At 36 feet long with an 11-foot-3-inch beam, the 360 CBR is a blend of high-performance boating on which Formula was founded and evolved into luxury yachting to please a day crowd or a couple for an overnight trip. The outboard version accommodates twin Mercury Verado V-12 600 engines, or triple 300, 350 or 400 hp configurations, giving buyers flexibility in their power choices. Since it’s a Formula, we would always recommend maxium power for ultimate fun.

My triple-400-powered tester broke 63 mph before it was suggested I slow down. That was significantly quicker than the sterndrive version. Sterndrives are far more popular on inland waterways, but outboards rule coastal salt water because of their ability to completely tilt clear of the water, self-drain and ease of flushing them to remove salt.

Interior and Accessories

At the helm of the test boat I had Mercury’s integrated electronic steering, joystick steering and dual Raymarine displays to monitor engines, bottom depth, and navigation. The glass cockpit design has flush-mounted switches and displays, a Fusion audio controller, trim-tab controls and an autopilot touchpad. The double-wide helm seat has a foot rest below the dash for comfortable positioning and an electrically adjusted seat.

In addition to the decades of design experience at Formula, every new vessel design is CAD modeled before working scale models of each section are built by hand to ensure all features function harmoniously before production begins.

Inside the cockpit, sumptuous details such as contoured seating with refined stitching and color accents invite relaxation. The U-shaped lounge incorporates stowage for a Yeti Tundra cooler, and versatile seating arrangements cater to social gatherings or sunbathing. Practicality and style are not compromised; recessed USB ports, cup holders, and the molded wet bar with a refrigerator and sink enhance utility and luxury.

The standard full-width fiberglass hardtop with a powered glass sunroof provides welcome shelter from the elements. The glass windshield walkthrough with an acrylic wind breaker panel leads to a roomy bow with a lounge with a double-wide forward-facing seat that wraps around 330 degrees for seating up to seven.

Venturing below deck via the two Corian steps leading to a woodgrain-finished sole, the 360 CBR’s cabin promises convenience and relaxation with full 6-foot-2-inch headroom. The space offers a welcoming retreat. An Ultrafabric lounge, stereo system, and thoughtful storage solutions exemplify Formula’s attention to detail. The designer-style transverse head compartment, complete with a full-height shower, ensures comfort and will surely impress guests.

There are only a few players in this luxury crossover market and Regal’s LX 36 is one worth a peek. It is powered by a pair of Yamaha’s 425 outboards and runs a little slower than the Formula but also enters the arena at a lower price point ($713,760 well-equipped). It offers spacious accommodations and a hardtop as well.

For those passionate about design, Formula’s 360 CBR bowrider offers customizable options. From the hull’s vibrant color selection to interior layouts, personalizing the 360 CBR is part of what makes Formula owners loyal to the brand. True to its CBR lineage, the 360 boasts an open bow with a single-level, flush cockpit and a true stand-up cabin with overnight accommodations.
