I often wear shorts. Some are dressy and others are fishy. The Huk Next Level Short pairs as well with a sun hoodie as it does with a silk shirt, striking a great balance between style and function. The quick-dry, sun-protecting fabric combines with wide belt loops, a zipper compartment on the front left thigh and velcro-flapped rear pockets to give me the utility required while chasing gamefish. A perforated yoke running between the pockets and below the belt loops, across the back of the shorts, provides ventilation and comfort. The gusseted crotch adds to freedom of movement, like when kneeling on the cockpit sole to unhook a fish.
Those perfs add a stylish touch as well. In concert with the fabric’s wrinkle-resistance, smooth, light feel and the short’s overall trim and cut, the Huk Next Level Short looks great.

There’s no reinforced plier pocket and no oversized zippers or flaps. There’s also no drawstring or floral print options. Huk does offer other shorts if bathing-suit style is your jam. Instead, the Next Level Short delivers a great mix of comfort, function and looks. After having worn them aboard my boat over a period of several months, I give them a solid buy recommendation. Available in 7-and 10.5-inch lengths and in black, gray, khaki, navy. $65, huk.com
